VERSILIA’S MAIN HOSPITAL:
ENERGY SAVING DESIGN
Status
One of the flagships of Health in Tuscany the famous hospital is located in a pine forest of 10 hectares. It as replaced four smaller and old hospitals and serves an area of 160,000 inhabitants distributed in 7 municipalities, which, however, become half a million during the summer season. Built in five years, according to the canons of the ideal hospital designed by Renzo Piano, in respects of its surroundings has separate paths for employees, visitors, and emergencies. But the peculiarities of the Versilia hospital does not stop there: in fact it is one of the most modern in Italy, with unique and innovative solutions for internal transport of materials, thanks to the turtles (intelligent robots that move on tracks magnetic) and the rack for the handling of medicines, medical reports and blood tests. Unique in Italy, there exists a similar only in France is the George Pompidou in ParisThe work done
Despite the good starting level, in terms of technological equipment at the disposal of the structure, such as insulation, the presence of a co-generator and the availability of trigeneration, the company that managed the maintenance of the plant components of the hospital, had correctly guessed that could exist further improvement, in terms of energy efficiency. Not always having a perfect equipment means a correct use and management of the plant; especially in cases where the traditional cooling and heating plant design, was not preceded by a careful energy saving design. To this end, CREA Engineering was charged for this working phases:
Step 1: Energy Audit;
Step 2: Predispose energy indexes control and identification of abnormal consumption;
Step 3: Study possible technical solutions to be taken, for further energy saving;
Step 4: Energy audit of the cogeneration plant;
Step 5: Training the personnel involved in the management of the system;
Step 6: Organize a conference to disclosure the results.

The results
Of great interest, the results of the energy saving design done. Among the most significant interventions the predisposition of a calculation model, on software, able to provide, to the plant operator, the production cost of the electrical kWh and the efficiency by the cogeneration, in accordance with the percentage of heat dissipation of the cogenerator itself. Through this calculation model the operator has the possibility to decide, based on the cost of electricity from the net, in the sections F1, F2, F3 and F4, the operating mode that best optimize the cogeneration system.
